Watercolor Salt Painting Instructions:

  1. Trace around your image on the coloring page (free leaf coloring page is at the bottom of this post) with glue.
  2. Sprinkle salt onto the glue like you would with glitter. Make sure to tap the paper to help the salt settle into the glue. Then gently lift the paper and shake off excess salt.
  3. Dip your paintbrush into water then blend into watercolor to soften. Saturate the paintbrush with watercolor. Then, gently touch the paintbrush to the salt. Watch the color spread!!
  4. All the painting to dry completely before you display or gift it.

This is an amazing way to show your children the salt painting process. They can do this with any printable or create their own drawings first with a pencil or draw directly on their papers with glue!

You can use this art activity during school or homeschool or just at home to have some fun!

Tips and Tricks:

  • If you don’t have any paint on hand you can use food coloring
  • If you want your colors to be bright and vibrant make sure to use more paint than water
  • You don’t have to wait for the glue to dry to start painting. You can paint right away or wait it’s up to you!
  • This activity can be done at any time of the year, it doesn’t have to be Fall! You can do this in January or December or August!
  • For easy cleanup, have your children do this inside an art tray or even a baking pan so you can easily dump the extra salt into the trash or sink.
