Learn how to give the gospel! This post will teach you how!

I had just gotten off work and ran to Barnes and Noble to grab a book I had heard about and desperately wanted. I grabbed “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” off the shelf and rushed to the check out counter.

The cashier took his time and read the title out loud as a question. “I kissed dating goodbye?”

To which I replied, “Yeah, it’s a Christian book, about friendship before marriage.”

“Oh really?” he asked, intrigued but not condescending.

He began asking more questions.

Something in me told me to continue the conversation and that he needed the gospel. I knew how to give the gospel, but instead- worried about missing my bus, I hurried the conversation and left.

That was ten years ago. And I still regret the missed opportunity.

I pray God used someone else to share the good news with my missed opportunity. When I got on the bus that night, was distracted by my phone and missed my stop in the ride free zone in Seattle.

I got off at the next stop I could. I was lost and had to walk to the train station in the dark.

Do I think that was all related? I’m guessing yes but I’ll never know for sure. All I could think about was that I didn’t share God with a stranger.

A responsibility we shouldn’t ignore

A few years later I read something in my bible that stopped me dead in my tracks. It’s the first part of Ezekiel chapter 33.

It’s kind of long so I’ll summarize. It tells of a man on watch of the land.

He sees “the sword coming upon the land” and in one scenario, he blows the trumpet and warns the people.

Whoever heard the trumpet but didn’t heed the warning, then his blood is in his own hands. And the man who heard the warning and did take heed his life would be saved.

In the second scenario, the watchman doesn’t blow the trumpet. And God says He will require those people’s blood at the watchman’s hand.

I read this over and over again. Thinking about the man I left in the bookstore.

And then I thought, hey it’s in the old testament, maybe it doesn’t apply to me. But then I found a reference to it in Acts 20:26-27.

Paul said “Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.”

2 Ways to share the gospel

I wrote all of that to say, I don’t take giving the gospel lightly anymore. I don’t think it was a mistake that in Matthew 28: 18-20 the last command Jesus gave to His disciples before ascending into heaven was to preach the gospel.

Sharing your faith without fear

But a lot of us look at it as an unattainable task. I’ll admit it’s scary.

Especially if you don’t know what to say.

But what helps me, and what should help you- is knowing the hope I have in Jesus and wanting everyone to have that same hope.

Think about when you found out that all your debt had been paid. Every last one of your sins were nailed to the cross, and theirs were too.

They just need to receive the gift that’s already been paid for. Let’s let the fear of them going to hell and being eternally separated from God-trump our fear of telling them the good news!

The perfect timing-you’ll know when to speak up

You know what’s amazing about God’s word? That it gives us instructions. Want to know when to give the gospel? Check for the signs.

In Romans chapter 3 verse 11b it says “there is non who seeks after God.” And John 6:44 says “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him”.

You see it is impossible for man to just one day wake up and seek after God. He has to draw them first.

Your friend/son/neighbor/sister isn’t going to wake up one day and tell you they were thinking about going to church this Sunday unless God is drawing them.

They aren’t going to ask you a question about Jesus unless God is drawing them. These are clear cut signs.

No one just picks up a bible and starts reading it for a bedtime story, or starts googling who Jesus was. God is drawing them.

And if He’s drawing them, then their heart is being prepared to hear the gospel.

That’s one of the reasons I know bookstore guy needed the gospel, not only from the soft whisper of God specifically telling me, but because something in him changed when I mentioned Jesus.

Something in him wanted me to tell him more.

First, pray. Pray for God to speak for you, for Him to help you give His message.

Learn how to give the gospel in two simple ways, using the romans road or the Gospel ABCs also includes salvation prayer | How to Give the Gospel in 2 Easy Ways

If you are having a conversation with someone who has shown interest in Jesus, there are a few simple questions you can ask them.

These questions are meant to be asked inside of a conversation, not the whole of a conversation. You can explain the answers to each question in more depth if they answer no.

  1.  Do you know if you’re going to heaven?
  2. If you were to die today and God asked you why He should let you into His kingdom what would you say?
  3. Do you know that your sins separate you from God? And even one sin, is deserving of death-and separating from God for all eternity in a place called hell?
  4. Do you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for all of your sins? Past, present and future?
  5. Do you believe that after He died, He rose from the grave 3 days later, conquering death?

Here are two practical ways to share your faith:

The first way to give the gospel- The Roman’s Road

This is the first way to give the gospel. It is a very thorough version. Through this, you use verses mostly in Romans to walk someone through salvation.

Check out this infographic for a gospel presentation outline:

The Romans Road

1. Romans 3:23- The Problem

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

All men are sinners when measured against the standard of a holy God.

2. Romans 4:4-5 The Predicament

“Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly his faith is accounted for righteousness”

There is nothing a person can do to earn or merit forgiveness and a right standing before a hold God.

3. Romans 5:12- The Penalty

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because all sinned”

Sin demands a penalty, and that penalty is physical death (where the soul is separated from the body) and spiritual death (where the soul is eternally separated from God)

4. Romans 5:8- Provision

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us”

God loves us so much that He provided Jesus Christ, His Son, to take our place on the cross and pay the penalty for our sins.

5. Romans 6:23- Pardon

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God, in grace is freely giving eternal life to every person who receives forgiveness for their sins through Jesus Christ.

6. Romans 10:9-10- Process

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

People must turn to the risen Lord Jesus Christ in faith, trusting Him alone, a part from any human merit, to deliver them from their sins and bring them into a relationship with God.

A prayer of salvation

Salvation Prayer

If you walk them through this and they want to pray and ask Jesus into their lives here is a simple prayer to walk them through. You can say a sentence first and they can repeat after you.

“Jesus, I know that I am a sinner in need of a savior. I ask you to forgive me of my sins. I believe that you died on the cross to save me from my sins. I now ask you to be Lord of my life, and I promise to commit my life to you.”

Woohoo! The more you do it, the less afraid you’ll be. And Luke 15:10 says “there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents”. I look at that as the angels throwing a mini party when someone is saved!

The second way to give the gospel- the ABC’s

Gospel ABCs

A- Admit that you’re a sinner

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

A person needs to understand that their sin is what separates them from a holy God. They need to admit that they sin.

B- Believe the Lord Jesus

They need to believe who Jesus is. That He is the Son of God sent down to the world to take the penalty for our sins.

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

C- Confess the Lord Jesus

They need to confess that Jesus is Lord.

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

After this, you can walk them through the prayer of salvation listed above!

Conclusion

The gospel is our responsibility as believers, but we shouldn’t look at it as something we are hesitant about, we should rejoice in the ability to share the gospel with someone!

We should want everyone to have the same hope that we have! There are clear-cut signs when someone is ready to hear the gospel, watch out for them and pray for God to give you the words to speak to them.

You can choose either way to give them the gospel, or make your own way! But the more you do it the easier it will become!

I’m praying for you all to have the courage to step out in faith and share the good news with someone.

And if you do, leave me a comment or send me an email about it. If there is someone you desperately want to share the good news with and need prayer, let me know!
